Three Rivers
Storm Drain Stenciling Team
sponsored by
ALCOSAN
The Three Rivers Storm Drain Stenciling Team evolved form
a strong partnership of the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority,
Allegheny County Health Department, Pittsburgh Water and Sewer
Authority and that Pennsylvania Resources Council. Students
paint the message "Dump No Waste, Drains to River"
on storm drains in their community. The program offers students
the opportunity to participate in fun and valuable community
service while gaining a better understanding of watershed
issues.
The program provides training to an adult who will act as
the group leader. Materials are provided free of charge such
as paint, stencils, gloves, safety vests and maps for students
to develop their strategy. By identifying the possible pollution
area in local neighborhoods, students develop an awareness
that people's actions can affect the natural environment.
Garbage, little, and other pollutants that are dumped into
storm drains do not simply disappear, these pollutants eventually
end up in streams and rivers.
The project can occur during class time, after school or
weekends, lasting from one to three hours. Student groups
of 10 to 15 are ideal for completing the project, although
larger groups are workable.
Equipment needed: Interested teachers, one to three hour
time slot, students grades 6-12
Fees: None.
