Addressing Biodiversity

The results of the Addressing Biodiversity meeting are provided as they were collected, with no filter. If no data is available under a particular challenge, none was provided.
1. Assessment of availability of adult education on Biodiversity
2. Identifying current Biodiversity education activities occurring in each community
3. Identifying opportunities to build on existing Biodiversity education

4. What products, tools and/or services are needed to improve Biodiversity education for adults?

1. Assessment of availability of adult education on biodiversity

March 6, 2002, South Central Region
1:30 p.m.
Unavailable - Education is not focused on adults. Adults have to seek out information and in most cases some knowledge is required in order to know where to look.
7:00 p.m.
None known.

March 13, Southeast Region
1:30
p.m
First Group
Unavailable - While some resources may be available, sources are not known for the average citizen.

Second Group
Available - The term biodiversity is not widely known/used, therefore EE centers do not advertise programs as such. Programs offered expose participants to the issue.

7:00 p.m.
Neutral - Education is available to those that already understand it. How do we make it known to those that are not already in the "loop"?
March 19, Northeast Region
1:30 p.m.
Available - Hard to get audience to attend. Seems the public only seeks information on those issues that impact them personally.
7:00 p.m.
Biodiversity was not addressed
  March 20, North Central Region
2:00 p.m.

Limited but available - Biodiversity specific programs are not really available. However, there is a lot of overlap with other topics.

7:00 p.m.
Unavailable - Although materials may be available, people are unfamiliar with the term.
  April 2, Southwest Region
1:30 p.m.

Available - Western PA Institute is beginning to offer more. Jennings offers public programs which touch upon the topic. The term "biodiversity" is not being introduced along with the core concepts.

7:00 p.m
Unavailable - Education is available but it's not widely known.
  April 3, Northwest Region
1:30 p.m.
First Group
Available - Education is available but it's limited. The term biodiversity is too broad.

Second group
Unavailable - The activities that are available are for audiences that already have a base knowledge of the environment and biodiversity. The audiences that need to be reached are not being reached, such as, city residents, lower income, under-educated individuals
.
