Pennsylvania Environmental Education Master Plan

This statement, along with the Pennsylvania Bill of Rights and the education quality goal statement, will serve as the basis for the Commonwealth’s environmental educational program.  This program will not be directed towards schools alone.  The entire community will be involved - every person through social, political, cultural, educational, economic and religious affiliations must help implement this master plan to sustain a quality lifestyle for future generations.”

Pennsylvania Environmental Education Act

On June 8, 1993 the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania enacted into law Pennsylvania Environmental Education Act. The act provides for environmental education programs; for further duties of the Department of Education and the Department of Environmental Resources; created the Environmental Education Fund; and provided for the disposition of a portion of certain fines and penalties.

Report of the 21st Century Environment Commission
The 21st Century Environment Commission was formed July 1, 1997, after being challenged through an Executive Order by Governor Thomas Ridge. Governor Ridge tasked the Commission with a very important assignment: to define the environmental priorities for the Commonwealth as we enter the next century. The Commission must also recommend methods to achieve the selected priorities or goals and determine appropriate indicators of our progress toward those goals.
Needs Assessment for the PCEE
A needs assessment in the form of an opinionaire was developed and distributed to determine how the Center may effectively serve the diverse needs and interests of environmental education stakeholders in the state.(1997)

PA Environmental Readiness for the 21st Century Survey
The Commonwealth completed its first Environmental Readiness for the 21st Century Survey in 1999. The survey assessed adult Pennsylvanians’ knowledge about, attitudes toward and behaviors related to the environment. (1997)

The Essentials of Environmental Education for Pennsylvania Workshop Evaluation.
In 1999 and the beginning of 2000, PCEE conducted a series of workshops covering aspects of environmental education including goals, methodology, curriculum criteria, resources, and teaching about environmental issues. Participants commented on what they already knew about EE, what they learned, what they found most useful, and other topics in which they were interested. Needs Assessment For The Professional Development Initiative Of The Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education.
In 1997 and 1998, PCEE conducted a statewide professional development needs assessment for environmental education. (2000)
Inclusion of Environmental Education in Pennsylvania Teacher Preparation Curricula:A Survey of Elementary Pre-Service Teacher Programs
The purpose of this study was to provide base-line information concerning Pennsylvania’s teacher preparation programs as they relate to environmental education and Environment and Ecology. (2001)
Voicing IdEEas Roundtable Meetings
Twelve meetings were conducted across the state to collect ideas and recommendations for adult environmental education. These are the comments and ideas that were collected.(2002)

National Research
Report Card on the Status of Environmental Education in Washington State
Students involved in environmental education score higher on standardized tests, tend to have higher grades and stay in school longer, according to a new report from the Environmental Education Association of Washington. (2004)
Closing the Achievement Gap: Using the Environment as an Integrating Context for Learning
This report by the State Education and Environment Roundtable (SEER) highlights the results of a three year study of schools using the environment as a context for their education practices. Four of the 40 schools investigated were from Pennsylvania, including Park Forest Elementary, Huntingdon Area Middle School, Radnor Middle School, and State College High.(1998)
The National Report Card on Environmental Attitudes, Knowledge and Behaviors
This is an annual research project by the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation and Roper Starch Worldwide, examining the public's perceptions, awareness and actions regarding the environment, regulation, and social responsibility. (1999)
State Education and Environment Roundtable
SEER is a cooperative program helping state education agencies strengthen the role of environment-based educational approaches in K-12 curricula, and in systemic school reform efforts. On their Web page you will find research, bibliographies and references, EE links, and Roundtable seminars.
Environmental Education Research from NAAEE
NAAEE produces, publishes, and offers a diverse array of materials of interest to practitioners, researchers, academics, students, and others involved in the field of environmental education. NAAEE publishes new monographs, manuals, directories, and other useful, exciting, and topical materials on a regular basis.
