Question of the Week

May is Wetlands Month! You're probably aware that marshes, swamps, and bogs are all different types of wetlands, but have you ever heard of a fen?

Martin Luther King
Source: EPA

Fens are peat-forming wetlands that receive nutrients from groundwater movement and drainage from surrounding mineral soils, rather than from precipitation.

Below are some statements about fens. Decide which statments are True (T) and which are False (F).

Fens are less acidic and have higher nutrient levels than bogs.

Fens are often found in the southern hemisphere.

Fens have no effect on water quality.

Fens are rare and protecting them is very important.
