Question of the Week

Now that spring is here, many people who farm or have gardens have begun to plant seeds. Several Pennsylvania farms practice Biointensive growing methods, which help to build soil structure and maximize high yields in small spaces.

In 1972, John Jeavons formed a group in California called Ecology Action. They organized to educate people about Biointensive agriculture, with the hopes of helping to combat world hunger. Since then, the Biointensive movement has spread throughout the United States.

Below are some agricultural techniques. Decide which techniques are used in Biointensive agriculture.

Check all that apply:

Heavy use of pesticides

Using compost as fertilizer

Deep soil preparation through double-digging

Close plant spacing

Using genetically modified seeds
Planting carbon-efficient and calorie-efficient crops
Using synergistic (complimentary) planting
