Fossil fuels have an important place in Pennsylvania history and none has been more abundant or profitable for our state than coal. Pennsylvania's coal was an essential element in the success of the American Industrial Revolution.
Coal is formed when decomposed plants and animals become buried under thick layers of rock and mud. Over geologic time, these decaying organisms are subjected to heat and pressure, and they eventually hardened to form coal.
