Question of the Week

Recently Pennsylvania has been getting a lot of snow. This snow is beneficial to a variety of ecosystems. One such ecosystem is a bog. Bogs are a unique type of wetland that are characterized by a thick carpet of sphagnum moss. Bogs rely on snow cover to protect the sphagnum moss from freezing during the colder months of the year.

Sphagnum bogs are threatened by peat mining,
land development, changes in water flow, and pollution from run-off. Recently, Pennsylvania gave additional protection to a 1,592-acre collection of unique and scenic bogs, marshes, swamp and forests by designating it as the Black Moshannon Bog Natural Area.
