Question of the Week

Energy for most ecosystems comes from the sun; there must be a flow of energy for an ecosystem to work.
Some of the energy that starts with the sun moves through photosynthetic organisms (including green plants and algae) to herbivores, carnivores and decomposers.

An energy pyramid describes the feeding and energy relationships within a food chain or web.    Each step of an energy pyramid shows that some energy is stored in newly made structures of the organism that eats the preceding one.

Explain the flows of energy from organisms to organisms within an ecosystem by checking whether these statements are true or false:

When looking at the feeding pyramid above, the top consumers gain the least amount of energy from what they eat.
The sun is the main source of energy for an ecosystem where plants use the sun to make their own food.
Energy does not affect what types of plants and animals can live in a particular ecosystem.
