Wetlands serve many functions. They prevent flooding, filter and clean water supplies, and provide critical habitat for wildlife.

Despite the benefits of wetlands, over half of all wetland habitats in Pennsylvania occurring historically have been filled.

In order to limit human impacts on wetlands people need to know the characteristics of a wetland.
