Act 43, also known as the Radon Certification Act, requires
radon mitigation contractors to be certified.
|
In
1984, a home in Eastern Pennsylvania recorded the highest
level of radon ever reported. This lead to a response of
massive radon monitoring, testing, and remediation efforts
by the Department of Environmental Protection. In 1987,
as a result of this crisis, PA Act 43 was passed.

The Radon Certification Act was passed in order to ensure
property owners that contractors are qualified to
perform the needed services.
|
There are
three types of Radon Certification:
1.) Testing: certification
for the placement and retrieval of any radon testing
devices and the analysis of the tester's own continuous
radon monitors
2.)
Mitigation: certification
for the repair or alteration of a
building in order to reduce the concentration
of radon in the atmosphere.
3.) Laboratory: certification
for the analysis of radon devices
Both Individuals and Firms can receive Radon Certification.
In order to receive certification, candidates must take
several radon courses, pass an exam, and prove that they
are proficient in handling radon equipment. Additionally,
continuing radon education is required every year.
|
It
is the responsibility of the Pennsylvania Department
of Environmental Protection to enforce the Radon Certification
Act. An individual who attempts to fake a Radon Certification
can be charged with a misdemeanor of the third degree.
