Mushrooms

(and other fungi)

 

Fall is a great time to see mushrooms growing in the forest, but what is the primary role our fungal friends play in the ecosystem?

a. As fungi grow, they increase the pH of the soil, thereby facilitating plant growth.
b. Fungi absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen back out into the atmosphere.
c. Fungi act as decomposers of organic material, releasing nutrients into the soil that can be used by plants and other organisms.
d. Fungi release toxins into the soil and regulate the number of microorganisms found there.
