IPM for Wasps and Hornets (pdf file)

PA Environment and Ecology Standard
4.5 Integrated Pest Management

Whether they are just trying to get their last meal, acting territorial, or trying to impress the females, the presence of yellowjackets, hornets, and wasps becomes more noticeable as summer ends.

Which of the following offers the best environmental solution to removing yellowjackets, hornets or wasps in an area?
Pour gasoline over the nest. The gasoline will act as a deterent and prevent future problems
Apply pyrethrin to the nest. This works by effectively "freezing" the bee.
Use a trap that draws insects in, but prevents exit. Physically remove nest in the evening.
Using a magnifying glass, direct the sun's rays to the nest and set aflame.
