Eight Pennsylvania bird species are associated with wetland habitats
These include:
American Bittern, Threatened
Bald Eagle, Endangered
Black tern, Endangered
King rail, Endangered
Least bittern, Threatened
Osprey, Endangered
Sedge Wren, Threatened
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Threatened
The Great Egret and the Yellow-Crowned Night Heron, both threatened species, prefer streams and shallow rivers as their main habitat.
Wetlands are very important habitats for birds. Up to one-half of the North American bird species nest or feed in wetlands!!!
Wetlands also provide habitat to numerous invertebrates, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and plant species!
Wetlands are an important part of our natural environment. Besides providing valuable habitat, wetlands filter and clean water, store water, recharge groundwater, recycle nutrients, and provide floodwater protection. Wetland also provide numerous recreational opportunities for people!
