The
wood frog, Rana sylvatica, can be found
as for north as the artic circle,
and survives the cold winter by freezing!!!
|
|
|
As
much as 45% of the frogs body may freeze and turn
to ice. During this freeze, the frog's breathing,
heart beat, and blood flow stops. Their eyes turn
white, as even their lens freeze!!
|
How
can the wood frog survive freezing?
Wood
frogs have physically adapted to the severe winters.
The frog is able to increase the concentration of
glucose inside it's cells, thus lowering
the freezing point of the cells and preventing
intracellular freezing.
Consider
it as natures antifreeze!

Other
Pennsylvanian frogs avoid freezing by overwintering
at the bottom of bodies of water.
